I'm a student pursuing a doctoral degree in late medieval history. My main interests include but are not limited to Latin, Italian, cultural theory, educational curriculum, historiography, cognitive processes, language-theory, gender relations and THE WESTERN CANON (mwahaha); i am not particularly interesting, avant-garde or risque; My main hobbies include the exciting activities of cooking, baking, going to the gym, eating green apple-caramel lollipops, restaurant reviewing and acting as child-like and sassy as possible. I keep these entries from the years of my life - no matter how i feel about them today - available because i find it useful to revisit events i now interpret differently. My name is heather, i'm of Montreal and i was born in the nefarious, ominous year 1984.

Planning the trip

house fireAs i read and listen about other people starting new careers (Vero and Shaun) or choosing new programs in school (Ilyusha), i’m feeling sort of like i am wasting my time. Arieh has suggested that i should be focused more on my upcoming globetrotting and i think he is right. I’m working on getting a travel agent to help me with the around the world ticket purchase and researching things like vacation travel insurance.

Last year when i purchased an airline ticket to Australia, i opted out of getting travel insurance figuring that there was nothing that could keep me from getting on that plane. Six weeks of pneumonia later as i stood in line to check-in genuinely terrified that they wouldn’t let me on all hopped up on painkillers, i realized that was a poor decision. The pneumonia might not have forced me to cancel my plans, but something even more horrible - like a house fire, a worse sickness or an accident might (knock on wood).

Veronica’s recent move to working for an insurance company has also encouraged me to re-evaluate my stance on insurance. Kanetix (see link above) offers a neat service that compares products and services for you from the major providers. I haven’t come to any decisions yet, but input and suggestions are welcome.

  • Kanetix.ca is cool because it isn’t an insurance company. Its a quote finder and I’ll bet it scares the crap out of most insurance agents - esp the expensive ones that count on clients not doing the research. If everyone in Canada used this service I bet the rates would come down.
