I'm a student pursuing a doctoral degree in late medieval history. My main interests include but are not limited to Latin, Italian, cultural theory, educational curriculum, historiography, cognitive processes, language-theory, gender relations and THE WESTERN CANON (mwahaha); i am not particularly interesting, avant-garde or risque; My main hobbies include the exciting activities of cooking, baking, going to the gym, eating green apple-caramel lollipops, restaurant reviewing and acting as child-like and sassy as possible. I keep these entries from the years of my life - no matter how i feel about them today - available because i find it useful to revisit events i now interpret differently. My name is heather, i'm of Montreal and i was born in the nefarious, ominous year 1984.

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: Beginning the Good-Byes

August 1-2, 2009: Beginning the Goodbyes
Saturday morning I had an appt at Prima Sole, a beauty salon recommended to me by Giulia from Rosso e Vino – I was apparently their first Canadian customer ever. Freshly defuzzed, I climbed back to San’Angelo, my favourite tanning spot in the entire city, and enjoyed some sun’s rays [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: Ups and Downs of Orvieto

July 31, 2009 – Orvieto

Although Orvieto is a relatively short distance from Perugia as the crow flies, to get there by train is a two-hour ordeal lengthened by a required transfer at Cordona. This made us decide to plan our trip on a weekday, when trains are more frequent, and we still had a transport [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: A Sunday in Arezzo

July 26-29, 2009< br/>
On Sunday we woke up early, stopped at McDonald’s for breakfast (yes, McDonald’s – they are better here and still very convenient even if in this non-breakfast culture we ended up having ham and cheese sandwiches and some cut-up peaches and nectarines), and took the train to Arezzo. On the way there, [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: Mia Nonna Mi Diceva di Non Sposare I Biondi Perche I Biondi Sono Vagabondi e L’Amore Non Sanno Far

June 23-25, 2009

Thursday is cleaning day – and it’s a good thing as our landlord dropped by for a visit on Thursday evening after being a sweetheart again and taking us out for dinner at a local agriturismo where we were stuffed with black truffle gnocchi, roast veal and lamb and homemade cantucci (cookies). I [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: Climbs, Spoleto and a Vigil

June 22, 2009
It feels a little odd to attempt to write a travellog about my excursion to Spoleto yesterday given that there was a motorcycle accident which took the life of Alberto, our favourite barman at the often-mentioned cafeteria which I had been visiting every day. Sunday night we had sat talking for about thirty [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: A Roadtrip to Flowered Spello

July 18, 2009

We are very lucky to have such a great landlady who decided to take us touring her favourite spots between Perugia and Spello on Saturday.
We told Jacqueline all about our previous day’s trip to Assisi – and she was unwilling to let us miss Santa Maria Maggiore – the church where St. Francis [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: Pilgrimage to Assisi

June 16-17, 2009
After a Thursday of house-cleaning and Latin, we decided to head to Assisi on Friday to let loose a little in this pilgrimage town. Little did we know that the day would be one of 37 degree heat and intense sunshine – but even as we wilted like proverbial flowers, there was still [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: A Walk Through Perugia

July 15, 2009
I spent most of Wednesday reading Persuasion on the grass outside Templo San’Angelo, planning day trips and cooking. This seems like the perfect opportunity to provide an overview of the guided tour led by an art historian affiliated with the Universita per Straniere that I was privileged to tag along for on Tuesday.

We [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: One Naught Gelato Flavour and Two Concerts

July 13-14, 2009

I was rather lazy on Monday after another night plagued with bad dreams (this time I was talking to Bryan all night – odd) and made a salad of cannellini beans, tuna and corn during the day, but once Bryan was out of class we scampered down our street – Via della Cometa [...]

Sybil’s Leaves 2009: Italian Sunset Highlights

I wish that i could find the motivation to wake up in the morning for sunrises - the closest i have come thus far was a close-call to a nuit-blanche spent reading Stranger in a Strange Land. Finally in possession of my photos from Rome and now inspired to start being a shutterbug in Perugia, [...]
