I'm a student pursuing a doctoral degree in late medieval history. My main interests include but are not limited to Latin, Italian, cultural theory, educational curriculum, historiography, cognitive processes, language-theory, gender relations and THE WESTERN CANON (mwahaha); i am not particularly interesting, avant-garde or risque; My main hobbies include the exciting activities of cooking, baking, going to the gym, eating green apple-caramel lollipops, restaurant reviewing and acting as child-like and sassy as possible. I keep these entries from the years of my life - no matter how i feel about them today - available because i find it useful to revisit events i now interpret differently. My name is heather, i'm of Montreal and i was born in the nefarious, ominous year 1984.

Atheism and Alexandria

A few months ago, i was on one of my atheistic, nihilistic rants that generally occur when copious amounts of alcohol, etc. have been consumed. I remember exclaiming, forcefully i might add, that there could not be a God, because no God would have let Alexandria burn. I am an academic to the core.
Of course, [...]

Because i am a dork…

As if the number of hours spent in my carrel everyday weren’t indicator enough… or the insane thrill i got when i was able to decipher an entire hand in Visigothic script earlier today… ZS sent me a link to the most awesome item ever!
BookBook: The laptop cover that makes your Mac look like a [...]

I’m tired and i want to go to bed

Show me the way to go home
I’m tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head
Where ever I may roam
On land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing this song
Show me the way to go home.
My grandmother used to sing [...]

yet more Sexism in the Workplace

My father would say i have gotten my undies in a knot.
In a stroke of managerial brilliance, half of our office staff was on vacation today. This left only us clerks to man the fort. Two, female, managers were left in the building. We had no receptionist.
You’ll perhaps remember from an earlier post that i [...]

Dandelions are our friends

Yellow and orange are my two favourite colours. Of course, they are both colours that look sort of funky against my blonde’s complexion - but no matter! Sunshine and candlelight and butter! I spend a lot of time not liking Spring - because it’s rainy and cold and lacking in bright colours. Today, however, is [...]

Morning Latin

This morning in the car I got a chance to use my Latin skills.
- Is there such a thing as a “Southern Borealis”?
- Actually, if there is it would be the “Aurora Australis” as Borealis is the Latin adjective for northern and Australis is the word for southern.
- Whatever, is there one?
Well, yes, there is and, although sometimes [...]

They’re wearing peach pants?

So, the courts have ruled that police officers in our little metropolitan area can wear non-regulation pants as a pressure tactic. Many are wearing camouflage - which the city had contested as being overly intimidating (aren’t you supposed to be intimidated by a patrolling police officer?). However, many of the officers have been seen wearing [...]

Really?

Two things i wasn’t expecting to encounter over the course of this week:
1. A stack of magazines in a restaurants SINGLE bathroom facility - this seems sort of counterintuitive, doesn’t it?
2. A little old lady (white hair, huge glases and peering over the wheel posture included) driving a taxi, that was lit up, through a [...]

Old News

Yesterday on the drive in i thought there was something interesting news on the radio, but i never got around to blogging about it - so here i am rehashing old news…
But first - I PASSED THE LATIN EXAM! I also pulled my mother’s back jumping on her for joy, knocked over a garbage can [...]

Montreal the new Boardwalk?

In exciting news, the new version of Monopoly - Here and Now - which uses international cities rather than streets has featured Montreal as the new Boardwalk. How we got the most expensive piece of real estate is not only a testament to our fervour for this eclectic city, but also to our taxes. HAHA!
I [...]
