I'm a student pursuing a doctoral degree in late medieval history. My main interests include but are not limited to Latin, Italian, cultural theory, educational curriculum, historiography, cognitive processes, language-theory, gender relations and THE WESTERN CANON (mwahaha); i am not particularly interesting, avant-garde or risque; My main hobbies include the exciting activities of cooking, baking, going to the gym, eating green apple-caramel lollipops, restaurant reviewing and acting as child-like and sassy as possible. I keep these entries from the years of my life - no matter how i feel about them today - available because i find it useful to revisit events i now interpret differently. My name is heather, i'm of Montreal and i was born in the nefarious, ominous year 1984.

That was a mistake

So, UofT, much like Concordia, continues to bombard my inbox with junk. Today i rec’d an invitation to vote for UofT as the Canadian school most worthy of international renown at the Globe Campus Poll. Guess who went and voted for McGill? Interestingly enough, Universite de Montreal is winning. I am sort of surprised. Hopkins, [...]

NEMLA Abstract Submitted!

Just hit send on my abstract submission for the Northeast Modern Languages Association Conference held this upcoming April in Montreal.
Back to my Latin translations…
Boccaccio’s De Casibus Virorum Illustrium, in recounting various aspects of Nero’s life, presents clues to the socio-political circumstances and concerns of its contemporary audience. This paper analyzes the depiction of those [...]

A Favourite Montreal Pub: The Sainte Elisabeth

I don’t know why but i keep forgetting about the Sainte Elisabeth. Be this because it’s tucked away on an adorable sidestreet or because each of my visits have been so relaxing and hassle-free, i do not know. However, i have been both in summer and in winter and enjoyed myself immensely every time.
As with [...]

Canadian Monopoly Championship 2009

It only seems fitting that given Montreal’s prestigious “Boardwalk” slot on the World Monopoly board that we should be hosting the three day national championship. This morning on the drive-in to work CHOM was interviewing the judge of the tournament being held from May 28-30th at the Montreal Science Centre.
Apparently most of the players are [...]

Queen Sushi: Restaurant Review

Go there… Go there now…
On Queen Mary Rd. just east of the Snowdon metro station is perhaps the best sushi place EVER. Okay, there may be better SOMEWHERE, but i have been trying really hard to find it (using guidebooks in other cities and friends’ recommendations) to no avail.
The 7 Dragon specialty roll is perhaps [...]

La Cantina: Restaurant Review

The accounting department and I went to La Cantina, located at 9090 St. Laurent for lunch on Friday. I was overjoyed to see a real, cloth tablecloth without even a slate of glass over the top. This early sign of some “old-school” service did not lead my expectations astray. The chairs were comfortable, the decor [...]

Montreal the new Boardwalk?

In exciting news, the new version of Monopoly - Here and Now - which uses international cities rather than streets has featured Montreal as the new Boardwalk. How we got the most expensive piece of real estate is not only a testament to our fervour for this eclectic city, but also to our taxes. HAHA!
I [...]

How do I love thee? Let me Count the Ways

Whenever i come home for even a short stay, my Montrealer friends ask how it is in Toronto - and the answer is always - tedious. I have great things to say about U of T and am perfectly aware that as a busy grad student holed up in her basement bachelor, i don’t get [...]
